The PUW 461, which was only built for two years, was a state-of-the-art handwound movement,
made in Germany, with directly driven center second and a slowly advancing date indication.
The PUW 461 bases directly on the second generation of the
PUW 361. Its most noteable difference is the setting lever
spring, which is no longer locked by a screw, but by a spring now.
motion works
Since the release of the 260/1260 caliber series in 1960, the movement construction was
not modified and the beating rate with 18000 A/h stayed the same, too.
slanted view
The minute wheel is directly driven by the mainspring and beared under a distinct bridge.
inside train bridge: Crown wheel with click
The position of the crown wheel is pretty odd, since it is not located on the upper side of
the mainspring bridge, but on the inner side of the gear bridge. Additionally, the click secures
the crown wheel. The mainspring barrel wheel, which is located on the inner(!) side of the
mainspring bridge, has no blocking function any more.
main plate
Although the PUW 461 has got a large balance and a large mainspring barrel, its
construction is quite compact.
dial side: detail bearing date wheel with spring
To adjust the date by setting the time forth and back, the PUW 461 uses a moveable beared
date wheel, which decouples the date ring when the hands are set back.
The only bad thing of this mechanism is, when the spring, which puts the date wheel to the date
ring, breaks, the date ring will no longer advance.
dial side: detail escapement cap wheel
The escapement wheel bearings contain cap jewels. On the dial side, the cap jewel has got
a rectangular shape.
dial side view
On the dial side, you see the yoke winding system and the date wheel with its
switching finger. The date advances slowly. The successor of this movement, the
PUW 561, uses an instant switching mechanism.

Test Results
The movement arrived in the lab in a watch, which appeared to be in good condition. Because
of that, the movement was not serviced and cleaned.
Timegrapher Protocol
Unfortunately, the timing results are very poor. The reason is unknown, but either the
balance wheel was damanged (bent pivots) or the whole movement really needs revision.
In either case, those large deviations are completely atypical for that movement series.

Important Note: The measured values here are only taken from one very specimen, which
was in bad condition.
You must not assume, that all PUW 461 will show these bad results!
